What typing speed & accuracy measures
Net typing rate — speed with uncorrected errors deducted. Depending on the agency and the battery, this can be a scored component, a minimum you either clear or do not, or both at once: CritiCall's keyboarding module reports a WPM figure that is scored, while many agencies additionally set a separate floor you must reach to continue. Postings we checked in 2026 asked for 35 to 40 net WPM, but that is what those agencies advertised rather than a standard, and the only figure that governs you is the one in your own job posting.
These assessments are modular — an agency chooses which components to run and sets its own minimum for each one. We can tell you what the skill is and how to get better at it. We can't tell you what score your agency wants, and anyone who quotes you a universal one is guessing.
A sample typing speed & accuracy item
In the drill you copy a passage like this for three minutes and get net words per minute and accuracy at the end:
Advise E-28 the address is in Ashland city limits, not county. 10-4, show B-43 out at the 1900 block of Harrison St. Squad 25 and Rescue 26 both en route, ETA 6 minutes. How our drill works
It's timed. You get a countdown clock and a fixed run length, because working accurately with a clock visible is a different skill from working accurately without one, and only one of them is being assessed.
Items are generated fresh from a new seed on every run, so you can't memorize your way through them and you never run out. Every run also records the seed that produced it, which means a specific run can be reproduced exactly if you ever want to query how something was scored.
When the run ends you get a breakdown, not just a percentage, including per-field accuracy and your typing rate. The point is to show you where the points went, so the next run can be different.
This module needs a physical keyboard. It measures keyboard speed and accuracy, so a phone touchscreen will give you a misleading score in both directions.
Which assessments include typing speed & accuracy
Agencies use different vendors, and each picks its own combination of components. This module appears in the batteries below — but check the job posting, because an agency using one of them may not run every part of it.
CritiCall
Biddle Consulting Group, Inc.
A computer-based pre-employment test for 911 dispatchers and call takers from Biddle Consulting Group, which says it is used by over 1,500 agencies. It is modular: Biddle says the software holds over 20 tests and each agency picks the ones that fit its jobs, so no two agencies necessarily test the same set. Biddle puts a typical sitting at one to three hours.
Emergency Communications (ECOMM) Exam
Ergometrics & Applied Personnel Research, Inc.
An Ergometrics-developed exam delivered through National Testing Network, in a Comprehensive (video) version and an Express version. Candidates book it themselves, online with a live proctor or at a test center, and NTN sends the scores to each participating agency they choose. It is a different product from the National Dispatcher Selection Test (NDST), which is published by Stanard & Associates — the two are frequently confused.
This module also shows up as a standalone requirement outside any particular battery — agencies frequently set it as its own hurdle.
How to get better at typing speed & accuracy
Specific to this module, and specific enough to change what you do on your next run.
Compare runs on net WPM, not gross
When you look back over your runs, track net WPM and accuracy together. If gross is climbing while net stays flat or falls, you are getting faster by getting sloppier, which is the wrong direction for a test that subtracts errors.
Do not hunt backwards for old mistakes
If you notice an error several words back, leave it. The time spent navigating there and repairing it almost always costs more than the error itself. Fix what is under your fingers, keep going.
Practice for three minutes, not thirty seconds
Short bursts flatter everybody. Most people's accuracy falls off after the first minute, and a sustained run is what actually reflects how you will perform. Use the full drill length even when you would rather stop.
Punctuation and capitals are the hidden tax
Plain lower-case prose is not what you will type. Shifted characters, commas, periods and proper nouns break most people's rhythm far more than the words do. If your speed collapses at capitals, that is a specific, fixable thing to drill.
Test on the same keyboard type you will be assessed on
Switching between a laptop keyboard and a full-size desktop board typically costs several words per minute until you readjust. If you know what you will be sitting in front of, practice on something similar.

How is this drill different from the free typing test?
Both run the same three-minute timed passage. The free typing test is where you go to take the test and get a result straight away, with no account. This page is about training: signed in, every run is saved to your dashboard so you can see whether your net WPM and accuracy are actually moving from week to week. Signed out, you get a shorter sample that is not saved.
What will I actually be typing?
A passage built from dispatch-log style sentences rather than ordinary prose: unit designators, 24-hour times, street abbreviations, phone numbers in parentheses, case numbers, hyphens and capitals in mid-sentence. That keystroke mix is deliberate, because it is what slows people down on the job and on data entry fields, and plain English trains the wrong keys.
Will I get the same passage twice?
No. Every run builds a new passage from a fresh seed, so you cannot get faster by memorizing it. Because every passage draws on the same mix of numbers, names and abbreviations, your runs are still comparable with each other.
